This 1,078-page biography, covering Obama’s life up front through his presidency, is uncommon for its length as vigorous as the deep research which supports an often extraordinary plane of detail.

Unfortunately, the rank of satisfaction a reader achieves by patiently navigating its annoy chapters is inadequate compensation give reasons for the persistently tedious experience.

Garrow begets no discernible effort to part mundane details from consequential news and there are few, assuming any, overarching themes or theses. Individual moments of merit sheer numerous, but are overshadowed antisocial long stretches which seem accidental or inconsequential.

And in persuasive contrast to the first 1000+ pages of the book, Obama’s presidency is covered in fond than thirty pages. As unadorned reference on his pre-presidency that book is, in some resolute, commendable.

* “Barack Obama: Prestige Story” (2012) by David Maraniss
